What is Multiple Sclerosis and Breast Cancer ? Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the central nervous system frequently complicated by devastating neurologic symptoms and progressive disability. Much progress has been made in the development of
Brought To You By gloStream immunomodulating drugs to help fight the progression of MS. These drugs are believed to work by interacting with various immune system components to reduce the amount of autoimmune destruction to the nervous system. We report 2 cases of women with MS on immunomodulatory therapy who presented with
locally advanced breast cancer with aggressive biologic phenotypes and exceptionally poor outcomes. We consider the potential for an increased risk of developing a poorer-prognosis breast cancer as a result of concomitant immunomodulatory effects of the previous MS treatment, particularly the effects the drugs are reported to have on regulatory T cells, and therefore present these cases and a review of the current literature. Current data in the literature reflect the need for further study in ascertaining the risk of biologically poor-prognosis breast cancer development in patients with MS treated with immunomodulatory therapy. Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and very aggressive disease in which cancer cells block lymph vessels in the skin of the breast. This type of breast cancer is called “inflammatory” because the breast often looks swollen and red, or “inflamed.” Inflammatory breast cancer accounts for 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancers diagnosed in the United States. Most inflammatory breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas, which means they developed from cells that line the milk ducts of the breast and then spread beyond the ducts. Inflammatory breast cancer progresses rapidly, often in a matter of weeks or months. Inflammatory breast cancer is either stage III or IV at diagnosis, depending on whether cancer cells have spread only to nearby lymph nodes or to other tissues as well. Additional features of inflammatory breast cancer include the following: Compared with other types of breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer tends to be diagnosed at younger ages (median age of 57 years, compared with a median age of 62 years for other types of breast cancer). It is more common and diagnosed at younger ages in African American women than in white women. The median age at diagnosis in African American women is 54 years, compared with a median age of 58 years in white women. Inflammatory breast tumors are frequently hormone receptor negative, which means that hormone therapies, such as tamoxifen, that interfere with the growth of cancer cells fueled by estrogen may not be effective against these tumors. Inflammatory breast cancer is more common in obese women than in women of normal weight. Like other types of breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer can occur in men, but usually at an older age (median age at diagnosis of 66.5 years) than in women. Take a Look At The Patients Treatment Options I have been living with Multiple Sclerosis for almost 12 years. Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with Grade III breast cancer. My tumor is 3/4 inch and I am negative for th BRCA gene and I don't know results of my HER2 tests yet. My cancer has not
spread as yet in my right breast. I am suppose to have surgery this coming Thursday, the 19th. I'm having a very hard time deciding whether lumpectomy or complete matectomy's. I do not ever want to go through this again. Due to my MS as well, I've now been removed from my MS medication - shots 3 times a week as it weakens my immune system and white blood cell count. I have to boost mine as I'll need chemotherapy. I'm scared to have the mastectomies done, but don't ever want to go through this again. I'm scared for a reoccurrence as I just turned 40 3 weeks ago. Is anyone out there that has MS and breast cancer? Can you tell me how you treat your MS now? Did you opt for mastectomy vs. lumpectomy? Help me please...I have to make this decision NOW as surgery is needed ASAP before my cancer spreads Is this a classic case study for President Obama Health Reform Act. should your Oncologist have Electronic Medical Records. Yes he Carl Jung Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) For Your Breast Cancer Patients. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment is a psychometric questionnaire designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. Now that it is clear that a genomic test for a breast cancer patient will provide data for patients and their families to make decision on positive breast cancer genomics test. Genomics begin with the provision of the human genome sequence in 20001 set in motion several waves of cancer research. The identification of an essentially complete set of protein-coding genes, coupled with the discovery of novel transcribed elements such as microRNAs (see the Glossary), has fostered an explosion of investigation using array-based approaches into patterns of gene expression in most cancer types. 96% Of Gennxeix Surveyed says we would get a divorce. It must be nice to be rich and sick
